To further promote the Reward profession, SARA is annually offering a bursary of R25 000 towards Masters or Doctoral research. Students should already be accepted with an accredited university for Masters or Doctoral research or have completed a detailed proposal with the intention to register in 2011.

Selection criteria for the SARA bursary
  • The applicant needs to have an honours/PDM for Masters or a Masters for a Doctorate.

  • Students should already be accepted with an accredited university for Masters or Doctoral research and be registered for 2010/11 or have completed a detailed research proposal with the intention to study in 2011.

  • The primary research question should be within the ambit of reward management, or at least HR Management with a focus on reward management. Therefore, the research topic should be relevant to the reward environment and add to the existing base of knowledge and methodologies.

  • The candidate should be committed to continuing to invest in remuneration as a profession.

  • Planned research must be completed within three years from receiving the bursary and formal feedback in the form of a presentation to the SARA membership, as well as a copy of the research document must be made available to SARA for inclusion in its existing body of research.
 You can apply any time from now and applications for 2011 close on 13 August 2010. SARA is under no obligation to grant the bursary if it feels in the discretion of the executive committee, that the applications do not significantly contribute to the discipline of Reward management within South Africa.

URC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2011, SouthAfrica

Postdoctoral Research Scholarship, University of Cape Town

Applications are invited for a limited number of Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to be taken up at the University during 2011. The value of the Fellowship is R175 000 per annum.

Eligibility:
All South African and foreign candidates are eligible, but preference will be given to applicants who graduated from Universities other than UCT. However, applicants who graduated from UCT at Both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are ineligible.

Only applicants who attained the PhD degree no longer than 5 years ago, and are not yet in academic or research posts and who have not previously held postdoctoral appointments are eligible. There is no restriction on any particular discipline or field of research, but applications from other African countries and from women and black researchers will be given preference. It is crucial that applicants’ research interests and faculty needs are in line with those of the host department.

Applicants who have not yet graduated with the PhD degree must provide proof that the PhD thesis has been submitted by no later than 15 September 2010. Such proof must be accompanied by a statement by the supervisor that the degree is likely to be achieved.

The Fellowships are based on academic merit and the number and quality of the applicant’s peer-reviewed publications will be taken into account. The Fellowships are in place to provide support to candidates who will undertake academic training and are tenable for a maximum of 12 months. Applications for renewal for one further year will be considered, but only in competition with new applications. Renewals are not Guaranteed. The Fellowship value is fixed at R175 000 for the full academic year and includes any relocation expenses. The Fellowship carries no benefits and a directive for tax exemption will be applied for by UCT on behalf of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the agreed research as well as optional but limited teaching duties as part of professional development. Successful candidates will not be expected to perform any service to the Department of the University of Cape Town in return for the Fellowship.

The South African Medical Research Council (MRC) invites applications for six (6) Research Fellowships in Health Research. This Career Development Programme is a partnership between the MRC and the Tertiary Education sector.

The purpose of the Research Fellowship is to build research capacity and scientific leadership by creating new positions for senior Post-Doctoral scientists that have demonstrated a potential to become established researchers. Preference will be given to proposals that address Public Health and Environmental Health research priorities in the country.

The six Research Fellows will be appointed for a period of 2 years commencing in Jan 2011, with the option to extend for a further 2 years subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds.

Application Process
  • Interested individuals must submit a full application to the MRC no later than 15 July 2010.
  • Applications must include a full research proposal, 3 referee’s reports, and written commitment from the employing institution to provide the infrastructure, top-up salary and matching contribution towards the running expenses for the research project.
  • Where the Fellow is to be appointed in an MRC in-house programme, the written commitment must be provided by the Unit or Group Director.
  • Applications will be sent out for peer-review and the applicants will be informed of the outcome of the application by September /October 2010, for uptake of the Grant in Jan 2011.
  • Applicants may be subjected to an interview before a final decision is made.

  • Be South African Citizens or in possession of Permanent Residency
  • Have a research doctorate and post-doctoral research experience
  • Apply within at least 5 years of obtaining a research doctorate.
Applicants will be considered on the strength of proven research experience equivalent to a senior post-doctoral research scientist. Preference will be given to applicants from the historically disadvantaged groups and Institutions. Applicants from Universities of Technology are encouraged to apply.

Value of the Award
  • Research Fellows will be appointed at the level of a Lecturer at a University or Senior Scientist at the MRC.
  • The MRC will contribute, R180 000 towards the Fellow’s salary and R50 000 for running expenses for the research project.
  • The university will top-up the MRC salary contribution to that of a Lecturer at the employing institution.
  • Where the Research Fellow is appointed in an MRC in-house programme, the programme will be expected to top-up the MRC salary contribution to that of a Senior Scientist.
Conditions
  • Where a Fellow is appointed at a University, the University must give a written commitment to provide the necessary infrastructure, salary contribution and a minimum of R50 000.00 for running expenses for the research project.
  • Where a Fellow is appointed in an MRC in-house programme, the Unit or Group Director must provide written commitment to provide the necessary infrastructure, salary contribution and a minimum of R50 000.00 for running expenses for the research project.
  • The Research Fellow must spend a minimum of 80% of his or her time undertaking full-time research on the approved project. Successful applicants will be required to sign a contractual agreement with the MRC and the university.
