Scholarship Boards in Nigeria

List of Scholarship Boards in Nigeria

Fund misappropriation, misplacement of priorities, abuse of political power bedevil most African states, unfortunately affecting educational systems adversely.

In Nigeria, elites send their wards abroad to study because of poor educational infrastructure. Student loans fell from a high of more than 46 million naira between 1972 - 1991, to present meager amounts (consider the huge difference in purchasing power between those times and now). Abstract on Nigerian student loans.

Despite this, some states manage to award scholarships, albeit to indigenes for study at home and abroad.

Below are links to official scholarship portals:

However, you may browse this site and/or search for 'osun state scholarships' using the 'Study & Scholarships search' box above and below on this page for other possible relevant scholarships.

    2. Hello @osavic90 the link shown above (i.e. http://www.edostate.gov.ng/ministries/education) was actually used by the Edo State Scholarship Board around 2011 and beyond. However, it seems the Board has abandoned that website as it is now indeed "useless" like you noted because we notice it redirects to a blank page. We have tried to get the current site but it seems the Board currently (June 2015) is NOT online. Regards

  29. @ola, we do not 'directly' offer funding here - we only post available funding on this site. Osun state govt, at present, does not offer any funding for its students at all levels. However, there are numerous UK PhD funding you may qualify for. Kindly search this site with the 'Study & Scholarships search' box at the top right-hand corner of this site. Wishing you the best!

  30. Hi,am an Ogun state student of Udu Sokoto. We have been waiting for our bursary for long but have not yet received it.Please wat is wrong?our bursary for long but have not yet received it.Please wat is wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  31. @anonymous, believe me, i feel your pain but the issue of non-payment of student bursaries is TOTALLY Sokoto state government decision. We at Study & Scholarships have no influence on that decision whatsoever. However, there are newspaper article that suggest bursaries are being paid by the government (see http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/sokoto-approves-n2135m-bursary-awards/ )

My candid advise is that you contact them directly for more information. We however note that the official site at http://www.sokotostate.gov.ng has not been working for awhile now; and our efforts to get the street address of the Sokoto scholarship board has not yielded fruits.

You may need to visit the state government secretariat to get further details. If you do visit them, you may be kind enough to send us the information so others may benefit. Do contact us again if you run into any more problems. Goodluck!

Would love if u pls reply sir.....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi yetunde, oyo state scholarship board was online but it seems the link is now broken (so, i have just removed the link); ogun has never had an online scholarship portal and i dont know if they will in the near future.
Truth is that scholarships are generally more available and accessible for postgraduate, rather than undergraduate students. That being said, you mustnt loose hope.
Its unfortunate that neither has an online scholarship portal at the moment. Perhaps they will in future. To contact the scholarship boards of either or both states and get answers to your questions, you'll need to visit the state's ministry of education, which are usually housed in the state government secretariats in all state capitals

  44. Hi @annonymous, unfortunately, the current Ogun state govt does not have any Local nor Oversea Scholarship schemes for any of its indigenes.
Hv, you may qualify for certain scholarship schemes. If you're resident in Rivers state, you can apply to the River state sponsored RSSDA Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Programme for Nigerian students. For more: see List of Postgraduate Scholarships for Nigerians, and also search this link.
Note that if their deadlines are past, you may need to wait till next year.

  45. Hello Admin, please I am currently a 300 level Mechanical Engineering student, I am from Abia state and I will really want to knw if ders any such thing as bursary or available scholarships i can apply for...as an indigene of Abia state...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi @Annonymous, to the very best of our knowledge, there is currently (as of today - 20th April, 2012) NEITHER bursary NOR scholarships officially available from the Abia state govt for students of Abia state origin. There may however be such in the future, but that remains to be seen.
However, there may be scholarships and bursaries from PRIVATE individuals available to or specifically for Abia state students. The most popular, since 2010, will be the Ochendo Scholarship Endowment (OSE) "...which is a private philanthropic intervention that will harness the potentials of Abia State indigenes in order to help the gifted but less-privileged youths." (see http://thenationonlineng.net/web2/articles/39330/1/Abia-floats-scholarship-scheme/Page1.html).
For a more complete list of these private fundings, i advise you contact the Abia state Ministry of Education at the address provided above.

    1. Hi @Annonymous, regarding Education projects, Enugu state on its official government website says that their key thrust is to "...Fund the state scholarship scheme (with Local Governments) to provide scholarship to talented but indigent students."
Even if this were a genuine scholarship scheme, it does not sound like one for indigenes studying abroad. Instead it sounds like a scheme for home-based students. However, up til now even for the home-based students, this is yet to be seen on ground.

    1. Hello Christian, you need to browse through Scholarships to find those you are ELIGIBLE FOR and then apply. You may do that on this site (either by searching through PhD level awards or by subjects - use links on left sidebar or search box above) or you may also search elsewhere on the Internet.

Also see this article: http://www.studyandscholarships.com/2009/06/tips-for-successfull-scholarships.html. Hope it answers all your questions. Regards.
