Scholarship Description
The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is offering extremely well qualified female scientists who are working towards a career in universities the chance of a two-stage funding for a total of six years.

The career development programme for female scientists is divided into the Hertha Firnberg Programme for post-docs, which aims to support women at the start of their scientific careers, and the Elise Richter Programme for senior post-docs,and the Elise Richter Program for arts-based research, Elise Richter PEEK, which aim at providing the necessary qualifications to apply for professorial positions within Austria or abroad.

The goal of the Hertha Firnberg Program is: i). Improvement of the career prospects for women in Austrian research facilities, and ii). very generous support during the postdoc phase for women at the start of their scientific careers or on its resumption following maternity leave.

Eligibility
Highly qualified female scientists of any scientific discipline, who have completed their university studies.

Requirements:
  • applicant must have completed doctoral studies. An earlier submission is possible, if it is foreseeable that the graduation will officially be completed within the application processing time (six months), and provided that all other requirements are met.
    (Courses of study abroad which are equivalent to the level of a doctorate at an Austrian university will be accepted irrespective of their designation.)
  • applicant must have international scientific publications
Scientists who have already completed their “Habilitation” (professorial examinations) are not eligible to apply.

Researchers who have been awarded an Elise Richter position are no longer eligible to apply for a Hertha Firnberg position.

Scholarship benefits
The value is 64.670 € personnel costs per year plus 12,000 € p.a. for material, travel, assistance etc.

Method of Application
The applicant is the female scientist submitting a research proposal for review. The co-applicant is her supervisor at the research institution. Applications are made during the application call period (see below), and have to be in English.

DEADLINES:
If the available level of funds is sufficient there will be 2 calls for applications per year (spring and autumn) with a 6 to 8-week deadline for applications in each case. Next call is October 16 - December 15, 2017 (date of the postmark)

PLEASE NOTE:
Allocation of the Hertha Firnberg Programme awards is by the FWF Board based on an international review process. Allocations are made in the June Board meeting (for fall call), and in the December Board meeting (for spring call).
