Scholarship Description
As part of the Short Training Initiatives programme (KOI), VLIR-UOS provides scholarships for participants from one of the 54 scholarship countries, spread through Africa, Asia and Latin-America.

Short Training Initiatives are intensive practical trainings of minimum one and maximum two weeks on a development oriented subject at Flemish universities and university colleges. The trainings are recognized and funded by VLIR-UOS.

There is no open call for short training scholarships. In case you are interested in participating in a Short Training Initiative, you will have to contact the organizer.

Eligibility
With the Short Training Initiatives programme VLIR-UOS funds intensive practical trainings on a development oriented subject at Flemish universities and university colleges.

The trainings focus mainly on participants from Africa, Asia and Latin America and are taught in English. VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to those participants.

Selection criteria:
The organizer of the training is responsible for the selection of scholars.

Eligible groups
Citizens and residents of one of the 54 participating scholarship countries:
  • AFRICA: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa,
  • ASIA: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Nepal, Palestinian Territories, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam,
  • LATIN AMERICA: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay,

All Flemish universities and university colleges are eligible

Fields of study / Trainings
The trainings respond to specific needs related to local and global development. The participants must be prepared to make an active contribution to the development of their native country.

Number of awards
At least 12 scholarships will be awarded every year

Sponsorship duration
Trainings will be for a minimum of one and a maximum of two weeks

Scholarship benefits
The funding of a Short Training Initiative includes at least 12 scholarships, each with a bench fee of € 2.000 per month, calculated according to the duration of the training.

Method of Application
Professors and teachers of Flemish universities and university colleges can submit a project proposal for a Short Training Initiative.

There is no open call for short training scholarships. If you are interested in participating in a Short Training Initiative, you can contact the organizer. VLIR-UOS will publish the list of coming Short Training Initiatives on 1 October.

With the Short Training Initiatives VLIR-UOS aims to expand the knowledge and expertise on a development oriented subject, together with actors from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
All scholars are obliged to return to their country of origin as soon as possible after the study or training programme has ended.
