In recent years, Africa has experienced an economic and political resurgence. There is mounting evidence of political stability and economic growth. New industries - manufacturing, telecommunications, banking, and agriculture - are flourishing.
The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars Program provides disadvantaged young people with the education and skills needed to succeed in the global economy.
The Program is building a global network of education institutions and non-profit organizations committed to its vision to educate young people in Africa who will contribute to the prosperity of the continent. This growing network will document and share best practices in real-time, as Scholars transition to university and the workforce.
The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars are economically disadvantaged young people showing academic promise and achievement. They are ready to learn and to make a difference in their communities, their countries, and their continent.
Partner institutions will identify and select young men and women from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated the following attributes:
- Academic Talent: Scholars value learning and have the drive to complete their education.
- Commitment to Giving Back: Scholars will apply what they learn to improve their communities.
- Potential to Lead: Graduates will be prepared and empowered to lead Africa into the future.
Talented yet economically marginalized young people of African nationality.
Currently, the network partners include: African Leadership Academy, American University of Beirut – Faculty of Health Sciences, Arizona State University, Ashesi University, Duke University, EARTH University, Michigan State University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, and Wellesley College.
