Scholarship Description
In recent years, Africa has experienced an economic and political resurgence. There is mounting evidence of political stability and economic growth. New industries - manufacturing, telecommunications, banking, and agriculture - are flourishing.

The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars Program provides disadvantaged young people with the education and skills needed to succeed in the global economy.

The Program is building a global network of education institutions and non-profit organizations committed to its vision to educate young people in Africa who will contribute to the prosperity of the continent. This growing network will document and share best practices in real-time, as Scholars transition to university and the workforce.

MasterCard Foundation® Scholars Program for Africans
Eligibility
The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars are economically disadvantaged young people showing academic promise and achievement. They are ready to learn and to make a difference in their communities, their countries, and their continent.

Partner institutions will identify and select young men and women from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated the following attributes:
  • Academic Talent: Scholars value learning and have the drive to complete their education.
  • Commitment to Giving Back: Scholars will apply what they learn to improve their communities.
  • Potential to Lead: Graduates will be prepared and empowered to lead Africa into the future.
Eligible groups
Talented yet economically marginalized young people of African nationality.

The MasterCard Foundation® Scholars Program will serve an estimated 15,000 young people at the secondary and university levels.

Scholarship benefits
The Foundation has committed $500 million over 10 years to an expanding network of education institutions and non-profit organizations that believe education is a catalyst for social and economic progress.

These partners are educating and providing holistic support to deserving young people who are committed to giving back. Students enrolled in the Scholars Program receive comprehensive scholarships, mentoring, leadership development, and life skills support as they transition to secondary school, university or the workforce.
