Scholarship Description
The Government of India through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) offers to African students the Africa Scholarship Scheme for undergraduate, postgraduate and further higher studies.

Specifically, the ICCR Africa Scholarship increases the number of scholarships funding for studies by Africans in various Indian Universities and/or Institutes at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M. Phil./Ph.D and Post-Doctoral Fellowship levels.

The Africa Scholarships aim to enhance academic opportunities for students of African countries. The ICCR implements this scheme on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Eligibility
Scholarships are for students of African countries.

Eligible groups
Under this Scheme, the Council offers scholarships to the following countries:
Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Cape Verde, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Comoros, Congo (Republic of), Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea (concurrent from Nairobi), Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Kenya, Libya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan (Republic of), Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sao Tame & Principe, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Please note that your placement to a particular educational institution/University will depend on the availability of seats and the course that you are choosing. Therefore, before filling your three choices, you are advised to check the Institutions/Universities available for the discipline that you intend to study.

Fields of study
All undergraduate and graduate (masters, MPhil/PhD, and M.Tech./ME, and Postdoctoral) courses of study and disciplines are eligible. Please note that no admission and scholarship is offered for MBBS, MD, MS and BDS courses.

Please also note that once you accept admission to a particular discipline in a particular institution, subsequent changes either in the institution or discipline would not be possible.

Number of awards
The ICCR offers 900 scholarships to the above-named African countries

Sponsorship duration
The scholarships are for the duration of the studies

Scholarship benefits
Selected candidates would be provided with return economy class air fares to the nearest international airport and Air-Conditioned Train fare to the place of study, if so required. Air ticket for journey from Home Country to India will be provided by the Embassy and return ticket will be provided to the scholar in India.

The selected students will also be paid living allowance, contingent grant, house rent allowance and thesis expenses, as admissible under the rules of the ICCR. They are also eligible to medical benefits at medical centres or dispensaries attached to universities / Institutes where they enrolled or in the nearest Government hospital.

Method of Application
Direct applications from candidates are not considered by ICCR. Candidates must fill in the prescribed forms for Scholarships for Foreign Nationals that are available with Indian missions abroad or download from the official site (link to it is below). Please read the instruction before filling out the forms.

The completed and signed application form which should be typed and not handwritten along with other attachments must be e-mailed as a pdf document to the Embassy/ High Commission of India in your country. A hard copy along with 5 photographs should also be delivered to the Embassy/ High commission of India. Applicant may approach this Embassy directly with duly completed applications, original educational documents and a certified copy of the same. Please note that your application will be considered only after it is verified and recommended by the Embassy/ High commission of India. ICCR accepts applications only through Indian Missions overseas. Candidates are advised to apply through the Indian missions in their respective countries. No application may be sent directly to ICCR or through their country’s Embassies/High Commissions in New Delhi.

It is important to visit the official website (link to it is below) for complete information. Applicants must also download and go through the guidelines / instructions on the official website carefully and fill the applications accordingly.

DEADLINES:
Application deadlines vary by Country. However, all applications is expected to have been submitted by 15th January 2017. Please see the official website for your specific country deadline.

PLEASE NOTE:
Since slots are limited, applicants are requested to approach the Indian Embassy with duly completed application form as soon as possible well before the due date.

Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

At the inaugural plenary of the India – Africa Forum Summit held in New Delhi in April 2008, the Honorable Prime Minister of India announced the Government of India’s initiative to enhance the academic opportunities for students of African countries in India by increasing the number of scholarships for them to pursue under-graduate, post-graduate and higher courses.

The ICCR implements this scheme on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs.
