ETS Resumes TOEFL Testing In Nigeria (January 2014)

TOEFL® Testing Resumes In Nigeria

Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced the resumption of one of its testing services, the TOEFL test, in Nigeria this January.

ETS develops and administers the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test, and the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) test all over the world. Few months ago, ETS indefinitely suspended both tests in Nigeria, citing security concerns.

On 9th January 2014, however, ETS posted the following notice on its website announcing the resumption of the TOEFL test:
Testing to Resume in Nigeria
ETS is resuming TOEFL® testing in Nigeria at a select number of test centers in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt starting January 25, 2014. Registration for all upcoming TOEFL test dates will open on Monday, January 13. Individuals interested in registering to take the TOEFL test should refer to the online registration system for details about test center locations and available test dates.
Educational Testing Service (ETS), the organ that develops and administers the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test, and the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) test in Nigeria, and elsewhere all over the world, has announced the suspension of these tests in Nigeria indefinitely.

Although it seems like the GRE test is still to remain suspended, yet resuming the TOEFL test is a step in the right direction.

On the 7th of November 2013, ETS had suspended both the TOEFL and GRE tests in Nigeria when it published the below notice on its website:
Information on Testing in Nigeria
Due to security concerns in Nigeria, GRE® and TOEFL® testing in the country has been suspended for an indefinite period. Candidates who have appointments to take the TOEFL or GRE Tests will be contacted by ETS to process a refund.
The news had at the time been most unwelcome for the many hundreds and thousands of Nigerian students wishing to sit for these exams.

The TOEFL measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings.
