Scholarship Description
The British Council is calling on Nigerian writers to send applications for an event it is organising (the GRANTA/British Council Writers Workshop Sponsorships) with Granta Magazine, UK ( and the Kenyan literary journal Kwani ( on the 18th till the 23rd of June 2013.

The event, GRANTA/British Council Writers Workshop, will comprise three parts: a public salon event, a reading for students and a workshop for new and aspiring writers. The events will all revolve around the theme of the ‘new writer and the space occupied by new writing’.

The British Council will select and sponsor 2 writers based on the criteria below, to attend the GRANTA/British Council Writers Workshop in Nairobi.

To participate, you must satisfy the following criteria:
  • Writers that are between the ages of 18 and 35
  • Evidence of having at least one piece of fiction published anywhere, even online.
  • Must be a writer who wants to develop their practice and publish internationally.
  • Applicants need to have valid international passports and must be available to travel to Kenya on the 18th of June to return on the 23rd of June 2013

Granta is a literary magazine and publisher in the United Kingdom whose mission centres on its "belief in the power and urgency of the story, both in fiction and non-fiction, and the story’s supreme ability to describe, illuminate and make real." In 2007, The Observer stated: "In its blend of memoirs and photojournalism, and in its championing of contemporary realist fiction, Granta has its face pressed firmly against the window, determined to witness the world."
