Scholarship Description
The Tata group comprises over 100 operating companies with operations in more than 80 countries across six continents.

Tata Africa Holdings operate in a number of African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Tata Africa Holdings initiates projects aimed at improving the quality of life of the communities in which it operates. It is involved in various educational initiatives that empower beneficiaries, enable sustainable livelihoods and provide them the possibility of becoming leaders across industries and in the government.

The company has partnered with a number of universities in South Africa to support postgraduate students who require financial need and show academic competence, with the Tata Postgraduate Scholarship. The Scholarships have been in existence since 2006 and have grown from strength to strength over the years.

Through the Women in Science programme, Tata Africa contributes to the national objectives of increasing the pool of women scientists in much-needed areas of research.

Eligibility
The scholarships are given to deserving but financially constrained students, for post-graduate studies across a wide range of specialities: the disciplines range from engineering to mining, architecture, digital arts, law, chemistry, mathematics, nursing and pharmacy.

Consideration will be given to students who are financially challenged and have a proven academic track record during their graduate years.

Eligible groups
Targeted at African students

Participating Institutions
Approved universities in South Africa.

Since 2006, the number of universities benefiting has increased as has the number of scholarships given each year from 10 to 40.

In 2013, two African universities will be included in the scholarship programme to reflect the Tata group's growing footprint in Africa. In addition, Tata Africa has partnered the Department of Science and Technology in South Africa to support the research endeavours of African women in science and technology related fields.

Fields of study
Tata Africa Scholarship Awards are awarded for post-graduate studies at Masters or Doctoral level. The bursaries are not faculty-specific, which means a wide range of candidates can be supported across several academic fields.

Number of awards
The programme has benefited 137 students, from disciplines such as engineering, mining, nursing, pharmacy, law, architecture and many more.

Last year 1,988 applications were received, a record number of postgraduate applications. Out of the 40 scholarships awarded each year, three Tata Africa Scholarships are awarded at the Women In Science Awards function that is endorsed by the Department of Science and Technology.

Scholarship benefits
Each scholarship is valued at R50000.

The Scholarship provides for the student's tuition, books, accommodation and stipend throughout the year. This allows the students to focus on their studies without the need to find additional employment to cover their financial costs during their study year. As these students hail from a financially challenged background, this has ensured that they remain full-time students at their academic institutions and under the guidance of their mentors they graduate at the end of the year.

The Tata Postgraduate Scholarships have allowed recipients to excel academically and become front runners in their respective fields. Till now, Tata Africa has disbursed in excess of R10 million towards this initiative.

The scholarships do not bind the recipients contractually to the Tata group, which allows the candidates to pursue their chosen specialisations.

Method of Application
A Call for Entries is made by the participating universities.

The universities follow a rigorous adjudication process to award these scholarships. Applications are reviewed by a panel of academics; each university screens each applicant, and gives its recommendations to Tata.

Please note:
Application Forms must personally be completed by the student. The criteria and information required is set out in the application form.
