Essay Description
United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, the African financial services group, through its corporate social responsibility arm, the UBA Foundation, offers the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition.

The competition is an opportunity for Senior Secondary school students in Nigeria to win university educational grants, through participation in a national essay contest, to study in any Nigerian University of their choice.

The essay competition is intended to test the students’ intelligence and ability to think creatively.

In this 2012 (2nd) edition of the National Essay Competition, UBA Plc is offering three winners from the country's senior secondary school students up to 2.25million naira.

Eligibility
Applicants must be senior secondary school students in any Nigerian Secondary school(s)

Eligible groups
Citizens from ANY Nigerian state

Participating Institution(s)
Any accredited Nigerian University / institution of higher learning

Essay Topic
Eligible students are expected to send in handwritten entries on the essay topic:
“As an African President, what would your plans be for the educational sector”
Number of awards
Three (3) awards will be offered

Essay Prizes
The three winning finalists, who will be selected by a panel of three Nigerian professors, will get educational grants to study in African universities of their choice.

Winner – N1,000,000 towards university tuition/fees and a laptop
1st runner-up – N750,000 towards university tuition/fees and a laptop
2nd runner-up – N500,000 towards university tuition/fees and a laptop

Consolation Prizes will be given to the finalists.

Winners shall enjoy educational grants to cover their tuition fees and will be enrolled in the UBA Scholar's program.

Method of Application
Entry Requirements
To apply to this competition:
  • Applicants must attach copies of their original birth certificates or photocopies of international passport data page.
  • Applicants should send in hand written essay entries of not more than 750 words on the competition topic.
  • Applicants must submit their contact information (school name and address, residential address, phone number and email address)
  • Applicants may only send in entries if they intend to attend a Nigerian University

DEADLINES:
All completed essays plus other necessary documentation must be received by UBA Foundation on or before the submission deadline date of 2 November 2012.

PLEASE NOTE:
Please note that terms and conditions guiding the competition shall apply to all winners. The decision of the judges is final.

The essay competition is running concurrently with the ‘Read Africa’ project of the Foundation, which was flagged off recently by the Kenyan author, Ngugi wa Thiong’o.

Under the ‘Read Africa’ initiative, role models in the society and top management of UBA Plc will be visiting secondary schools to mentor the students and give out copies of this year’s literature book, Weep not Child, by Ngugi wa Thiong’o to the students, courtesy of the Foundation.
