Scholarship Description
The University of Witwatersrand in South Africa offers a small number of sports scholarships. The award is based on outstanding academic ability and achievement in one field of sport.

The University Council Sports Scholarship is available to all home and international students, undergraduate and postgraduate, who gain admission into any of its faculty. This award is available to all faculties.

Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply for the University of Witwatersrand's University Council Sports Scholarship before the deadline date advertised below.

Eligibility
Conditions include:

(a) Outstanding academic achievement in matriculation or university examinations

(b) Outstanding achievement in one field of sport

(c) Must be a registered student, either undergraduate or postgraduate (full-time) at the University of the Witwatersrand

A student who is offered and accepts a sports scholarship will be required to:

a) register with the Wits Sports Council

b) join a sporting club of this University in consultation with the Director of Sports Administration

c) report on sporting progress at least twice per season to the Director of Sports Administration or his/her nominee

d) attend practices and compete for the sporting club of this University throughout its annual season

e) compete in South African universities’/tertiary institutions’ tournaments for Wits if and when selected.

Undergraduate and/or postgraduate students from all faculties who are active in any of the sports available at Witwatersrand. Thus eligible students could be:

  • Hockey recipients
  • Football recipients
  • Recipients in other codes

If you are successful at the scholarship application, the award TENURE will be for One year

The specific VALUE of this scholarship award is at the discretion of the Committee

Method of Application
Eligible candidates will need to apply by filling in an application form, which may be obtained from the university scholarship office. One passport size photograph must be attached to the application form.

The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is a multi-campus South African public research university situated in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. It is more commonly known as Wits University.

The university has its roots in the mining industry, as do Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand in general. Founded in 1896 as the South African School of Mines in Kimberley, it is the third oldest South African university in continuous operation, after the University of Cape Town (founded in 1829), and Stellenbosch University (founded in 1866).
