Scholarship Description
The New Zealand Government, through the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board offers the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships.

Each year a group of exceptional Māori students is selected to continue the legacy of Victoria Cross winner Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu and the other members of the 28th (Māori) Battalion in a Memorial Scholarship.

These Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships support high achieving tertiary students of Māori descent. Applications are open now and close on 28 September 2017 at 5pm.

Eligibility
The Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board is looking for exceptional applicants of Māori descent who are undertaking tertiary study in 2018 and who possess characteristics that are considered consistent with those of the members of the 28th Māori Battalion.

To apply for these scholarships, the following apply:
  • You must be of Māori descent and
  • You must be able to describe the Ngā Ahuatanga characteristics you possess that are similar to those identified as consistent with the 28th (Māori) Battalion soldiers.

Participating Institutions
All accredited tertiary institutions of learning in New Zealand

Fields of study
Any undergraduate, masters, masters education research or doctoral level study. All studies must be full time

Number of awards
6 scholarships are offered this year - 3 undergraduate, 1 masters, 1 masters education research, and 1 doctoral scholarship awards

Sponsorship duration
The different awards have duration as follows:
  • Undergraduate - full time study, for up to 5 years
  • Masters - full time study, for up to 2 years
  • Masters education research – full time study, for up to 2 years and a paid internship with the Ministry of Education for up to 6 weeks for each year of study.
  • Doctoral - full time study, for up to 2 years. The doctoral scholarship is to support doctoral candidates through the final 24 months of study.
Scholarship benefits
The scholarship is valued thus:
  • undergraduate awards - $10,000 each per year
  • masters award - $15,000 per year
  • masters education research award – $15,000 per year and a paid internship for each year of study.
  • doctoral scholarship - $25,000 per year. The doctoral scholarship is to support doctoral candidates through the final 24 months of study.
Method of Application
Decide which scholarship you want to apply for and then complete the required documents:

Undergraduate scholarship:
  1. Ngārimu scholarship application form
  2. Confirmation of your enrolment at a tertiary institution
  3. A verified tertiary academic transcript or your NZQA record of learning for NCEA L2 (and L3 if applicable) or equivalent Cambridge International Examinations or International Baccalaureate if you are yet to start tertiary studies.
Masters scholarship:
  1. Ngārimu scholarship application form
  2. Confirmation of your enrolment in a Masters degree at a tertiary institution
  3. A verified academic transcript
Education research masters scholarship:
  1. Ngārimu scholarship application form
  2. Confirmation of your enrolment in a Masters degree at a tertiary institution
  3. A verified academic transcript
  4. A 500 word essay on what your Māori education policy research is about
  5. A favourable commendation from your academic supervisor
Doctoral scholarship:
  1. Ngārimu scholarship application form
  2. Confirmation of being currently enrolled in a tertiary institution and have completed your "provisional" year in a PhD programme
  3. Confirmation that your tertiary institution's Doctoral Committee has approved your "full enrolment" status in the PhD programme
  4. Committed to submitting your thesis at a time agreed to between you and the Board
  5. A 500 word essay on what your thesis/doctorate is about
  6. Evidence of near completion of studies
  7. A favourable commendation from your chief supervisor
  8. Submission of an appropriate budget including co-tenure of other scholarships.

PLEASE NOTE:
In 1939, when New Zealand joined forces with the allies, Māori men and women volunteered and made a significant contribution in all areas of the defence forces and home services. Notable among them were recruits who formed the 28th (Māori) Battalion, and perhaps the best known is Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu. In June 1943, a scholarship fund, the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Scholarship Fund Board, was established to support Māori education by administering funds that promoted Māori education.
