Scholarship Description
On behalf of the University, the Cambridge Trust is pleased to offer the Vice-Chancellor's Awards (for UK and EU students) and the Cambridge International Scholarships (for international students) for those undertaking PhD studies.
The University of Cambridge, via the Cambridge Trusts, offers approximately 80 Cambridge International Scholarships (CISS) to outstanding Overseas Students who embark on a research course in the following academic year.
The Vice-Chancellor's Awards and Cambridge International Scholarships ensures that the 250 highest ranked students by their respective Departments, across all disciplines, and irrespective of nationality, receive full financial support to undertake research leading to a PhD.
Eligibility
To be eligible to receive a Cambridge International Scholarship students must:
- be liable to pay the Overseas University Composition Fee (i.e. be assessed as ‘Overseas’ for Fee Status purposes, and NOT assessed at the Home/EU rate)).
- be engaged in a three or four year research programme leading to the PhD (i.e. will be registered as PhD, “Probationary PhD” or “CPGS”) starting in the next academical year.
- be engaged in full-time study.
- have a high upper-second-class undergraduate honours degree from a UK Higher Education Institution, or an equivalent from an Overseas Institution.
The only factors taken into consideration are academic ability and research potential, examination results, and references. The financial situation of applicants does not affect the selection of scholars.

Sponsorship duration
Eligible courses are three or four year research programmes leading to the PhD. The length of the scholarship is for the tenure of the PhD, whether three or four years (as determined by the length of the PhD).
Scholarship benefits
The scholarship will pay the University composition fee and an annual living allowance for a single person. Thus, each award will underwrite the full cost of fees and maintenance for the duration of the course.
In the case of some selected candidates, the Trust will subsequently identify partner organizations willing to provide part of the cost of the scholarships, but the Trust will meet the balance, and where necessary the whole costs, of these awards.
Method of Application
In order to be eligible for an award commencing in the next academical year, you must have applied for admission as a graduate student to the University of Cambridge by the deadline date. Please see the Graduate Admissions webpage 'Application & Funding Deadlines'. All applicants should complete the funding section of the online application form via the Applicant Portal expressing their 'wish to be considered for funding'.

DEADLINES:
You must apply for admission to the University by the funding deadline if you wish to start a course in the 2018-19 academic year. Applicants who wish to start their PhDs in 2018-19 must apply by 6 December 2017 or 4 January 2018, whichever deadline is appropriate for your course.
PLEASE NOTE:
It is important that you send in your supporting documentation as soon as possible after you have applied for admission online, because your application will not be looked at until this is received. The closing date for this funding is firm - no late applications can be considered.
The CISS awards will be made on a competitive basis to those applicants considered by their departments to be the most outstanding.
