Scholarship Description
UPDATED SCHOLARSHIP CALL: Graca Machel Scholarships
The key aim of the Graca Machel Scholarship Programme is to help provide the female human resources necessary for economic, social, and cultural development in the Southern African region and to develop an educated and skilled workforce that can benefit the wider community.

Canon Collins Trust manages this scholarship on behalf of the Graça Machel Foundation. It is generously supported by the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust, MacSteel International, and SASOL.

Eligibility
To apply you must be:
  • a woman
  • a national of and resident in one of the SADC countries: Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • in possession of a good first degree or about to graduate in the year of application
Please note that applicants will be expected to show their commitment to the development of their country and region.

This scholarship is for women who have experienced significant struggle in their life and who have sought to overcome those barriers, be they related to gender, disability, poverty, age or racial discrimination.

Selection Criteria:
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to women on the basis of academic/professional merit, financial need, intended academic programme, leadership potential and commitment to work for constructive change in Africa. Applicants must have at least two years relevant work experience.

Eligible groups
Female citizens of Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Participating Institutions
Any approved university in South Africa

Fields of study
Health, Education, Science & Technology, Economics & Finance, Development

Number of Awards
Sixty (60) scholarships are awarded annually

Sponsorship duration
All scholarships are for postgraduate study, either for one academic year if based in the UK or for two years if based in South Africa.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship includes full tuition, stipend, mentoring and other support for Honours, masters and PhD study at South African universities.

Method of Application
Are you eligible? Ineligible applications will not be considered. Applicants must apply to their chosen universities separately and awards are conditional on the applicant being offered a place at the relevant university.

This year, 2013, the Canon Collins Trust will be combining the application process for the Canon Collins Scholarship and the Graça Machel Scholarships for Women. You need to apply only once to be considered for both (if eligible) of these scholarships.

DEADLINES:
The application process normally opens in June and closes in August, for study commencing in January the following year. For study in South Africa, the application deadline is every August 3 and courses will start February of the following year. For study in UK, the application deadline is every December 3 and courses start September/October of the following year.

PLEASE NOTE:
When the application process is closed the application system will not be accessible via the Canon Collins Trust website. Please do not submit applications using old forms – these will not be processed.

Applicants wishing to pursue postgraduate study in South Africa may also apply for a Canon Collins Scholarship. This scholarship is open to both men and women. [NOTE: This year, 2013, Canon Collins Trust will be combining the application process for the Canon Collins Scholarship and the Graça Machel Scholarships for Women.]
