EDUFI Fellowships (formerly, CIMO Fellowships)

Scholarship description
The Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) (formerly, Centre for International Mobility, CIMO) awards scholarships for foreign Doctoral level students and young researches to carry out postgraduate studies and research and teaching in Finnish universities. The EDUFI Fellowship is a component of the entire EDUFI Scholarships.

EDUFI Fellowships are open to young Doctoral level students and researchers from all countries and from all academic fields. Master's level studies or post-doctoral studies/research are not supported in the programme.

The scholarship programme seeks to increase mobility to Finland, to support the internationalisation of research and teaching and to foster links between Finnish and foreign universities.

Eligibility
The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with a Finnish host university - please see the section 'Doctoral Admissions' for further information (you'll find links to the universities' Doctoral Admissions pages there). You are also advised to visit the Finnish universities' own websites for info on Doctoral level study and research options.

The scholarship is meant for foreign Doctoral level students/researchers to be invited to Finland or who have not resided in Finland more than 1 year at the time of applying. If you are already residing in Finland, please note that the Doctoral students/researchers for whom the Finnish universities can apply for a EDUFI Fellowship should not have resided in Finland for more than one (1) year prior to submitting a EDUFI Fellowship application.

The primary target group in the EDUFI Fellowship programme are such Doctoral level students who will be doing their Doctorate (or Double Doctorate) at a Finnish university.

Visiting Doctoral-level students and researchers who are doing their Doctorate degree at some foreign university can also be considered eligible, provided that the motivation letter of the hosting Finnish university department presents exceptionally good grounds for such an application.

No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by EDUFI.

Method of Application
Please note that prospective students/researchers cannot apply for a EDUFI Fellowship independently (formerly, CIMO fellowships). If a Finnish university is willing to host you, then the Finnish university department wishing to host you can apply to EDUFI for the grant on your behalf. In other words, only the hosting Finnish university can act as an "applicant" in the EDUFI Fellowship programme. While the application is submitted by the host institution, the scholarship is awarded as a personal grant to the foreign postgraduate student or young researcher.

The application form for the EDUFI Fellowship can be downloaded from the official website (link to it is below). Additionally, the following attachments are required for a EDUFI Fellowship application:
  • A motivation letter from the applicant (the hosting university), max 1 page
  • Complete CV of the scholarship candidate
  • Research plan (2-5 pages)
It is important to visit the official website (link to it is below) for complete information on this fellowship offer and how to apply to it.

DEADLINES:
There are no annual application deadlines in the EDUFI Fellowship programme. Applications may be considered at all times. However, please note that applications should be submitted at least 5 months before the intended scholarship period. Decisions will be made within approximately 3 months after receipt of application.

PLEASE NOTE:
Post-doctorate research will not be funded. The applicant should have no more than one application being processed at a time. The number of EDUFI Fellowships previously granted to the hosting department may restrict receiving new grants at the same time. This fellowship is not for you if you are already residing in Finland and/or have resided in Finland for more than one (1) year prior to submitting a EDUFI Fellowship application. If you have resided in Finland longer than that, please refer to the section 'Other sources of funding' on the official web site (link found below).
