Scholarship Description
One of the three initiatives the Lilly Fellows Program sustains is the Two-Year, Residential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Valparaiso University.

Lilly Fellowships are two-year residential fellowships for teacher-scholars who seek to renew and enrich their intellectual and professional lives while preparing for leadership roles at church-related institutions of higher learning.

Each academic year, three Fellows are appointed for two-year periods. Fellows are selected from applicants who evince an interest in the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation and are considering a career at church-related colleges or universities. Fellows are in residence at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Eligibility
Competition for Lilly Fellowships is open to persons interested in the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation and in considering a career at a church-related college or university. Research or dissertation topics are not restricted to religion.

For appointments beginning in the academic year 2013-2015, an applicant must have received the PhD, DMA, DFA, MFA, or equivalent terminal degree no earlier than December 2011. The degree must be completed by August 2013.

Fields of study
Fellows will be recruited from the following disciplines: art and art history; creative writing; history; interdisciplinary studies; languages and literatures; music and music history; philosophy; religion; rhetoric; theatre history and theatre arts. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their interest in the aims of the Lilly Fellows Program and a sense of commitment to explore teaching as a Christian vocation.

Sponsorship duration
Lilly Fellows are appointed for two years at a rank equivalent to that of instructor. Fellows are expected to be in local residence throughout the two-year term of their appointments.

Scholarship benefits
Starting salary for 2013-2015 will be $46,800 plus standard benefits, a moving allowance, and an annual professional and travel allowance.

Lilly Fellows are incorporated into a community of Christian teacher-scholars.

Method of Application
Application materials must include:
  • A curriculum vitae, with educational degrees, teaching experience, and publications. For applicants in studio art, music, or theater performance, portfolios, audio and/or video recordings and other forms of relevant documentation are welcome (electronic portfolios are preferred). Artistic exhibition, public performance, or production involving undergraduate students may substitute for teaching, at the discretion of the program director.
  • Graduate transcripts from all graduate institutions attended. Transcripts can be included in an official dossier.
  • Two letters of recommendation that should, in addition to addressing the applicant's teaching and research, comment on the strength and character of the applicant's commitment to an academic vocation and suitability for the Lilly Fellows Program.
  • An application essay of not more than 1,000 words that discusses the sources of the candidate's interest in this fellowship program, the candidate's preparation for and dedication to undergraduate teaching, and the candidate's immediate and long-range research interests.
All application materials should be directed to The Selection Committee. It is strongly preferred that documents are sent in one complete package but may be sent separately if absolutely necessary. Facsimiles are acceptable as long as the original is mailed as well.

DEADLINES:
Completed applications for the 2013-2015 Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowships in Humanities and the Arts must be received by no later than Thursday, November 1, 2012.

Please note:
Final selection of the Lilly Fellows is made by a Valparaiso University faculty committee that includes the Program Director.

Finalists will be invited to Valparaiso University for mandatory on-campus interviews on February 8-10, 2013. Up to three postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded.
