ETS Suspends TOEFL and GRE Testing In Nigeria Indefinitely

TOEFL® and GRE® Testing Suspended In Nigeria Indefinitely

Educational Testing Service (ETS), the organ that develops and administers the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test, and the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) test in Nigeria, and elsewhere all over the world, has announced the suspension of these tests in Nigeria indefinitely.

ETS cites security concerns as its major reason for this regrettable action.

In addition, it says all Nigerian candidates who before this suspension had applied for the Test of English as a Foreign Language and Graduate Record Examination tests will be contacted and issued a full refund of the amount they paid to ETS.

On the 7th of November 2013, ETS posted the following notice on its website:
Information on Testing in Nigeria
Due to security concerns in Nigeria, GRE® and TOEFL® testing in the country has been suspended for an indefinite period. Candidates who have appointments to take the TOEFL or GRE Tests will be contacted by ETS to process a refund.
This is truly not good news but a very sad development for the many hundreds and thousands of Nigerian students who sit for the GRE® and TOEFL® testing monthly.

These two tests are essential for successful school admission for foreigners seeking undergraduate or postgraduate degrees overseas, especially in North America.

While TOEFL measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings, GRE measures the abilities of graduates in tasks of general academic nature, regardless of their fields of specialisation.

With this sad development, many Nigerian students have been thrown into a difficult situation, with the only solution in sight being to travel outside Nigeria to neighboring countries like Ghana to sit for it.

About the ETS

ETS develops, administers and scores more than 50 million assessment tests annually in more than 180 countries, at more than 9,000 locations worldwide.

In addition to assessments, they conduct educational research, analysis and policy studies and develop a variety of customized services and products for teacher certification, English language learning and elementary, secondary and postsecondary education.

  5. Do these tests (GRE, GMAT) apply to the transition from Undergrad to Grad only? What if a MSc plans to go for a PhD, do they still need to take these tests and - most importantly- why?
