Scholarship Description
If you would like to study in Germany, DAAD is pleased to welcome you and is willing to help you select an appropriate programme, finance your stay, and provide information on how foreign students live in and are supervised in Germany.

DAAD Scholarship Programmes have benefited hundreds of African students since inception. The scholarship is offered to students from developing countries and is also available for Nigerian Students.

Each year, DAAD scholarship are awarded to postgraduate students wishing to study for a Master’s or PhD degree. The DAAD scholarships can support students who want to study in their country (i.e. In Country Scholarships) or abroad.

DAAD does not sponsor undergraduate studies for Nigerian Students.

Eligibility
Requirements and Selection Criteria:
  • Bachelor degree first class honours or second class honours upper division (B.A./B.Sc. 2nd class upper division) and M.A./M.Sc.
  • At the time of application, generally no more than six years should have passed since the applicant gained the last degree
  • 2 field research phases (of altogether 12 months) are possible in your home country
  • As a rule, the grant is preceded by a 4 or 6 months lasting language course (selection date is once a year, generally at the end of January).
  • German language skills are not expected.
  • Age limit: 36 years

List of available awards for Nigerians
  • Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists:
    Research grants to run for more than 6 months
    Application deadline: 15 October each year
    During the funding a maximum of 2 field research phases in your home country (of altogether 12 months) are possible.
    Please regard that the beginning of your grant can only be in April or October.
  • Grants in accordance with the DAAD Sandwich Model:
    Application deadline: 15 October each year
    During the funding a maximum of 2 field research phases in your home country (of altogether 12 months) are possible. The Doctorate degree has to be gained in the home country.
    Proof of enrollment as Doctoral student at the home university must be enclosed.
    Please regard that the beginning of your grant can only be in April or October. As a rule, the grant is preceded by a 4 or 6 months lasting language course (selection date is once a year, generally at the end of January).
  • Research grants to run for 1 month up to 6 months
    Application deadline: 15 October each year
    Earliest commencement of the grant is 1 May.
  • Research stays for University Academics and Scientists:
    Application deadlines:
    1 October for stays as of February of the following year,
    1 April for stays as of August.
  • Re-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holders:
    Application deadlines:
    1 October for stays as of February of the following year,
    1 April for stays as of August.
  • Scholarships for Artists and Architects: Study Scholarships:
    Application deadline: 15 October each year
    Together with the complete application documents a work sample has to be submitted.
  • Scholarships for University Students Reading German Studies:
    These grants are offered within the scope of:
    a) Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists (more than 6 months; up to six months; at the time of application)
    b) One-Semester Scholarships for University Students Reading German Studies
    c) Study Scholarships for Graduates of All Disciplines
    d) Summer course grants
    Application deadline: 15 October each year (exception Summer Course grants: 15 December). Receipt of applications for Summer Course grants at DAAD: 1 February of the following year.
  • University Summer Course Grants for Foreign Students and Graduates:
    Application deadline: 15 December each year.
    Receipt of applications for Summer Course grants at DAAD: 1 February of the following year.
Please note that in most cases, intended field research phases have already to be mentioned with the application. Also German language skills is not expected.

Scholarship benefits
The DAAD will reimburse an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance after the applicant’s arrival in Germany. So please observe that the travel expenses have to be financed in advance.
