Scholarship Description
The Canon Collins Trust administers the James Learmonth Scholarship Programme, as established by the family, colleagues and friends of James Learmonth after his death in 2003.

The aim of the James Learmonth Scholarships at Chancellor College Malawi is to support teachers and educational leaders in Malawi to pursue studies in education.

Eligibility
Applicants must be:
  • a first or second year student on the MA in Education (Policy, Planning and Leadership) at Chancellor College
  • a national of and resident in Malawi
  • in possession of a good undergraduate degree
Selection Criteria:
The Trust assesses applications on the basis of the information given in the application form. We apply the following criteria:
  • Academic Record and References; 
  • Relevance of Proposed Course of Study to the needs of Southern Africa; 
  • Work Experience; 
  • Commitment to Country/Community; 
  • Motivation for Study; 
  • Application form; and 
  • Overall Impression.

Scholarship benefits
This scholarship is valued at approximately US$3,500 per academic year, to cover tuition fees and provide a modest living allowance. This figure may be amended, subject to confirmation of tuition fees for 2016.

Method of Application
Please apply only if you are eligible. To apply, you will need to download a copy of the Application Form. Save a copy of it on your computer. You will not be able to fill it in until you do this. Return the completed form by email to Canon Collins, along with all the requested supporting documentation.

James Learmonth was an influential educational practitioner in the UK who believed strongly that education was the key to greater inclusion, social stability and international co-operation. When James died in 2003, his family, colleagues and friends decided to establish the James Learmonth Scholarship Programme in his memory.

Chancellor College is the largest college of the constituent colleges of the University of Malawi. It is also known as 'Chanco'. The college has five faculties: Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Education.

The University of Malawi is an educational institution established in 1964 and composed of five constituent colleges located in Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe. Of the five colleges, the largest is Chancellor College in Zomba.
