Course Offered: Analytical Chemistry
Course Level: Graduate (PhD)
Provider: European Union 7th framework
Country to Study in: Germany
The Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH – UFZ is offering a position for three years within the European Union 7th framework ‘PEOPLE’ programme Initial Training.
The project aims to develop novel applications for the analysis of carbon stable isotope composition of polar organic contaminants (chloro- and bromophenols, chloroacetic acids, herbicides (phenoxyacids e.g. 2,4-D)) using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer linked to liquid chromatography.
Person with interests in analytical chemistry (sample preparation, LC method development and mass spectrometry) and biogeochemistry.
Candidates should have a master certification in the area of natural sciences, preferentially chemistry or analytical chemistry.
Due to the international character of the project, excellent English communication skills are expected.
We provide excellent supervision in a young international team.

CSI:Environment team, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry, Leipzig, Germany
Field of study
Doctoral studies in Chemistry.
The project aims have been alluded to above. The different steps of the analytical methods (sample preparation, chromatographic separation and detection) will be optimized, and the possible isotope effects caused during each one of these steps will be investigated.
To validate the methods, reference biotic and abiotic degradation experiments (e.g. microbial reductive dechlorination of chlorinated phenols by selected microbial strains) will be used. The developed LC methods will be applied to investigate the carbon isotopic fractionation and (bio)transformation of selected compounds in situ.
Number of awards
One position is currently available
Throughout the duration of the position - three years
The composition of the CSI:Environment team network is well balanced. As such, CSI:Environment will provide a training platform for young researchers in the emerging field of environmental forensics and biogeochemistry using isotope techniques.
Each early stage researcher will develop an individual career development plan in interaction with the supervisors and will get the opportunity to complete a PhD thesis.

CSI:ENVIRONMENT is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework programme and has started on November 1, 2010. The network consists of 10 full partners (including one industrial and 9 academic partners) and 4 associated partners from 9 EU countries.
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ was established in 1991. It has about 1,100 employees in Leipzig, Halle/S. and Magdeburg an annual budget of approximately 100 million euro.
