Scholarship Description
Under exceptional circumstances and subject to review conducted under the auspices of the Vice-President Research, access to a portion of a grantee’s remaining balance may be approved through the University of Toronto – Research Completion Award (UT-RCA) program. The Vice President, Research establishes an annual allocation from the GRF for the UT-RCA program.

Therefore, all UT-RCA applications are considered on the justification for the request and the merit of the proposed use of funds relative to other applications in the context of the annual allocation.

Eligibility
A UT-RCA applicant may apply to access unspent SSHRC or NSERC grant balance to complete the research for which the grant was made.

The Applicant must justify the request resulted from an exceptional circumstance that occurred during the tenure of the SSHRC or NSERC grant and prevented or delayed the conduct of research. These include:
  • Life situations that include maternity/parental or other personal leave, medical or health-related matters;
  • Significant new administrative duties that were not anticipated when the grant proposal was submitted to SSHRC or NSERC;
  • Unforeseeable research challenges.
As a condition of funding, all UT-RCA recipients must commit to seeking new funding from NSERC or SSHRC at a specified upcoming deadline.

Sponsorship duration
UT-RCA awards normally do not exceed 12 months in duration and will run from April 1st to March 31st. 3. There will be no extensions on UT-RCA awards.

Under certain SSHRC and NSERC programs (including SSHRC Standard Research and NSERC Discovery Grants), grantees receive an automatic one-year no-cost extension following the original funding expiry date to complete their research using unspent funds. After the automatic extension year, SSHRC and NSERC allow unspent funds to be transferred to the University’s General Research Fund (GRF) which supports critical research initiatives at the discretion of the Vice-President Research.
