Scholarship Description
The Taiwan Ministry of Education offers the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship program for overseas students to undertake the study of the Mandarin language (Huayu) in the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The goals of this scholarship offer are to encourage international students (excluding Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao SAR students) to undertake Mandarin language (Huayu) courses in the Republic of China (Taiwan), in order to provide them with opportunities to increase their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society, and to promote mutual understanding and interactions between Taiwan and the international community.

Eligibility
International applicants above the age of 18, who possess a high school diploma or higher, excellent academic performance, and are of good moral character may apply.

Candidates with one of the following qualifications may NOT apply:
  1. Overseas Chinese students or a national of the Republic of China (R.O.C.)
  2. Students currently registered at a Mandarin Language Center or in a degree program at any university or college in Taiwan.
  3. Individuals who have already received a HES or a Taiwan scholarship in the past.
  4. Exchange students to Taiwan during the scholarship period.
  5. Individuals currently receiving financial benefits from the Taiwan government or other educational institutions

Participating Institutions
Any registered Mandarin Language Center approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The List of Language Centers is available on the official website (link to it is below). The recipient should apply for admission according to the regulations of the particular center.

Once admitted, the recipient should send a photocopy of the admission letter to the local embassy or mission before June 30th for confirmation. Recipients who do not send their documents before the deadline will be disqualified from the scholarship selection process.

Sponsorship duration
Huayu Enrichment courses will include either a 2-month summer term (June and July or July and August), or short term classes which may last 3, 6 or 9 months to one year respectively.

With the exception of the summer classes, in principle, the duration of the scholarship is from September 1 to August 31 of the following year. If recipients fail to come to Taiwan for enrollment during the designated time, they will forfeit their right to retain their scholarships.

Scholarship funding will become effective on the date of the recipient’s enrollment. Scholarship funding will end according to the scholarship’s expiration date or if the scholarship is revoked.

Scholarship benefits
The award value is a Monthly stipend of 25,000 NTD. Recipients are strongly suggested to prepare enough funds to support themselves for the first 4 to 5 weeks of their time in Taiwan because the first month’s stipend may require extra processing time.

Method of Application
To apply, you need to submit the following documents to local embassies or missions before the announced deadline (i.e. to ROC (Taiwan) Embassy/ Consulate (General)/ Representative Office/ Taiwan Technical Mission or project representative in your country):
  1. Completed application form
  2. Official transcripts for highest degree attained
  3. Study plan (statement of intent)
  4. Two recommendation letters
  5. Photocopy of applicant’s passport
  6. Proof of application to a selected language center (Scholarship applicants must also apply directly to the language centers which are included in the language centers listof their choice.)

DEADLINES:
The yearly application period is from February 1 through March 31. All required application materials should be forwarded to the office of the Ministry of Education by March 31, 2016.

PLEASE NOTE:
As stated in the embassies and missions announcement, a document review or personal interview will be conducted.

If a successful candidate waives his/her right to a scholarship before arriving in Taiwan, his/her position will be filled by the next candidate that has been selected by the local embassy or mission. The deadline is November 30.
