Scholarship Description
Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA) offers the Economic Research Southern Africa Scholarships to full-time students enrolled for a master’s degree in Economics at a South African institution.

ERSA seeks to build long-term excellence in research and policy analysis in the field of economics. Academic excellence in economics is therefore a necessary criterion for eligibility. Applicants must provide a convincing demonstration of the ability to succeed in a credible postgraduate programme in economics.

Students will be required to work in South Africa as economists for a period of one year after obtaining the master’s degree. ERSA scholarship holders will be expected to present a paper based on the dissertation component of their degree, at an ERSA workshop in the research group which is relevant to their area of specialisation.

Eligibility
Any South African citizen who obtained an average of 70 per cent in the degree preceding the masters for which the scholarship is awarded, and who has shown academic excellence in economic studies. Priority will be given to designated groups.

Selection Criteria:
The procedure of students’ selection is oriented to academic excellence and ability to do research in economics in a relevant field of study in South Africa.

Participating Institutions
Approved South African institutions of higher learning.

Scholarships can be utilised at the South African institution of choice of the scholarship winner.

All institutions of higher learning in South Africa are encouraged to participate in the scholarship programme, including but not limited to proposing their best students for the scholarships.

Number of awards
Ten (10) scholarships are available to full-time students

Sponsorship duration
Funding is awarded for a duration of One (1) year

Scholarship benefits
Each scholarship, valued at R80,000 is awarded to enrolled full-time students. Funding will be disbursed to successful candidates as follows:
  • R70000 upon written proof of acceptance to the relevant programme at the institution of choice.
  • R10000 upon submission of the final dissertation to the ERSA working paper series. Standard quality verification processes will apply.

The application pack should include all of the following:
  • CV
  • Details of the intended programme to be studied.
  • University where the studies will take place, as well as proof of acceptance.
  • Certified transcript of marks obtained during university study – for all years, including the most recently completed semester of study.
  • An essay of between 300 and 500 words outlining your intended direction of research, and why ERSA should consider you for the bursary above other applicants.

DEADLINES:
The deadline date for scholarship submission is 31st December 2016.

PLEASE NOTE:
Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applicants will be subject to a short-listing process. Finalists for the scholarships may be invited for an interview for final selection. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by 1 February 2017.

Upon completion of the degree, scholarship holders will be required to submit a paper, based on the dissertation component of their degree, to the ERSA Working Paper series. Publication will be subject to standard quality verification standards.

ERSA is a research programme which is funded by the National Treasury of South Africa. ERSA is funding post-graduate scholarships for masters study in economics.
